This permanent indication test uses colouration to show the aquarist the pH value and the CO2 content of the aquarium water at any time.
You can read off whether the pH value is within the optimal range and whether the plants have sufficient CO2 as their main nutrient available during the day 24/7.

How exactly does the test work?
The CO2 dissolved in the aquarium water diffuses in the container of the permanent test, passes into the air column containing the indicator liquid and then dissolves in the liquid. This creates a pH value, which results in the discolouration of the indicator liquid. The colour displayed corresponds to a certain pH-value and, depending on the carbonate hardness of the water, you can read off whether the resulting CO2 content is too high, too low, or optimal.
If another pH-lowering or increasing substance (e.g. pH-Minus) apart from CO2 is added to the aquarium water, it cannot diffuse through the air column in the permanent test and thus does NOT affect the indicator liquid. In this case the pH value displayed would not be correct. It only shows correct values, when there are NO other pH-influencing substances in the water besides CO2.

How long does it take until the test displays correctly?
Due to its design the test is somewhat sluggish, because the CO2 gas needs to first "migrate" through the air column in the test vessel, then into the indicator liquid and can only then be displayed. It can therefore take up to one hour until the test shows the current CO2 content of the aquarium water for the first time.

Recommended CO2 content:
Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium): 15-35 mg/l;
Lake Malawi-Tanganyika aquarium: 4-10 mg/l;
Plant aquarium with few fish (aquascaping): 20-35 mg/l 

CO2 test liquid with 2 reading scales for various permanent tests

Approx. 15ml test liquid for long-term CO2 test. This is simply filled into a test container and preferably diluted with water with a KH of 3-4° (but undiluted is also possible). A green color change in the optimal range of 20-30 mg/l CO2 is then achieved.

Usage

Fill 1 to 2 ml of our CO₂ checking solution into your permanent checking device and put it into an area with good current in your tank. After 1 to 2 hours you can see how much CO₂ there is in your tank. When the liquid is green, your aquarium has an optimal CO₂ content of approximately 20 mg/l.

A permanent CO₂ check is a very useful thing in a tank. Often the plants lack essential CO₂ and do not grow at their optimum. A permanent CO₂ check gives you a sufficiently exact reading how much CO₂ you have in your water. The colourant bromothymol blue is used here as it changes its colour with certain pH values.

CO₂ diffuses into the air bubble in the permanent test from the tank water and thus into the testing solution (and vice versa). Depending on its CO₂ content, the pH value in the testing solution changes, and with it its colour. The constant carbonate hardness in the testing solution determines which CO₂ concentration causes which pH value. The testing solution “CO₂ Check 20 mg per Liter” turns a light green when its pH is around 6.6, which corresponds to a CO₂ concentration of 20 mg/l. Thus you know that your tank water has a carbon dioxide concentration of 20 mg/l when the testing solution is a light green.

Cleaning and care of electrodes 
Bacteria, lime and other impurities which settle on the electrode can falsify the real pH value. The regular cleaning and calibration of the electrode ensure precise measurement and an unaltered pH value. Electrodes always need to be stored in a humid place. 

Easy to use 
Fill 10 ml of each of the two calibration liquids (pH 7 and pH 4) into cuvettes. Fill the third cuvette with distilled water. Remove the electrode from the aquarium and dry it. Immerse the electrode in the calibration solutions in the order given in the instructions, rinsing each time. The complete set contains all the liquids required for the professional and regular calibration.
