The Emerald Betta is originally from Thailand, where it is mainly found in smaller bodies of water near rice paddies. As a labyrinth fish, the Betta Smaragdina has a labyrinth organ that allows it to absorb atmospheric oxygen and thus survive in oxygen-poor waters. The emerald fighting fish shows itself with very beautiful iridescent blue and green colors - especially on the fins and as spots on the individual scales - on a reddish-brown basic color.

Care in the aquarium

In the aquarium, this fish needs dense planting, ideally with floating plants, and other retreat options. Compared to the "classic" Betta, Betta splendens, the Betta smaragdina is relatively peaceful and does not necessarily have to be kept alone. Above all, keeping them in pairs or a male with several females usually works without any problems. Several pairs can be kept in a sufficiently large tank, or males who have grown up together get along well.

Feeding

Betta smaragdina should be fed varied and mainly with live and frozen food. However, he can also get used to flake or granulated food.

Sexual Characteristics and Breeding

Males and females of the Emerald Betta are similarly beautifully colored, which is why determining the sex based on color is difficult. However, the fins of the male are somewhat longer than those of the female, and the ventral and anal fins are also pointed.
