Rotala rotundifolia is one of the very popular stem plants in aquaristics and is one of the less demanding Rotalas. It originally comes from Asia, where it grows in swampy areas or along the banks of streams. In the aquarium it forms elongated and narrow leaves, whereas on land these are rather rounded (hence the name "Round-leaved Rotala").
Rotala rotundifolia has 15-30 cm long stems (2-3 cm wide) and long and narrow leaves. Unlike other species, the Rotala is relatively easy to care for, although it needs good light to produce red foliage. It is a fast grower and willingly develops side shoots, which means it needs to be trimmed often to allow light to reach the lower parts of the stem and keep them from bare.
