Purigen® is a synthetic adsorption resin and unlike any other filter media. It contains no ion exchangers but a unique, large-pored synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble contaminants from aquarium water. The amount and speed of absorption exceeds other filter materials by over 500%. Purigen® controls ammonium, nitrite and nitrate by removing organic waste that would otherwise produce these harmful compounds. The influence of Purigen® on trace elements is minimal. The redox potential is significantly increased. An unprecedented clarity of the water is achieved. Purigen will gradually darken with use, it can easily be refreshed by treating with bleach. Purigen® is suitable for freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

Why Purigen® is different:
Selectivity: Purigen® is the filter granulate with the highest absorption capacity for organic filtration on the market. No other product comes close to its ability to eliminate cloudiness and achieve unparalleled water clarity. Unlike other products on the market that are simply ion exchange resins, Purigen® has been specially developed to specifically filter out organic compounds. Where the capacity of ion exchange resins has already been exhausted by metals and other substances, Purigen® has only just begun to exploit its potential. In general, Purigen® ignores elementals and has an extreme affinity for nitrogenous organic compounds. The main source of nitrogenous compounds is waste. Fish, corals, even plants produce nitrogenous waste. Purigen eliminates this waste faster and more consistently than anything else on the market.

Capacity: Purigen® has an extensive absorption capacity due to its enormous surface. All other available resins are smooth beads, even under the microscope these show a smooth surface. Purigen® also consists of beads, but these are not smooth. Purigen® has microscopic pores that make its active surface many times larger than that of smooth nodular resins.

Regeneration: Purigen® can also be regenerated. As it absorbs waste, Purigen® changes color from light beige to dark brown, almost black. When depleted, it can be regenerated with a mixture of bleach and water. The bleach literally burns away the organic matter that has been removed from the aquarium. Avoid products that claim to be saline regenerable. This refers to the regeneration process of ion exchangers. A saline solution cannot remove organic matter. In addition to the limited capacity of these resins to absorb organics, only the trapped ions are exchanged.
 

Instructions for use:
Rinse before use. Use in a fine mesh filter bag. Depending on the organic load, one liter of Purigen® is sufficient for up to 4,000 liters of aquarium water and for up to six months. The depletion of the material is indicated by a clear discoloration to dark brown or black.

Regeneration:
Soak Purigen® in a 1:1 solution of bleach and water for 24 hours. Do not use a metal container, make sure it is well ventilated and out of the reach of children. Important: Use regular 8.25% hypochlorite household bleach. This must not be provided with fragrances or dyes. Then rinse well and soak in a concentrated solution of chlorine-binding water conditioner for 8 hours. We recommend 4 teaspoons of Prime® per cup of water. (Caution: such water conditioners, which particularly contribute to the protection of the mucous membrane, can permanently deactivate the Purigen® and make regeneration more difficult.) Rinse well again and bathe in an acidic or neutralizing solution for use in fresh water. To make these, we recommend Discus Buffer™ or Neutral Regulator™, 2 teaspoons each per cup of water. Original color and full capacity should now be restored and the Purigen® is ready to use again. There should no longer be any smell of chlorine. If in doubt, bathe in a small amount of water and determine any residual chlorine with a chlorine test.
